When You Should Start Brushing Your Children's Teeth

Dental hygiene is an essential part of anyone’s health and well being, and this is especially the case with children. A lack of focus on good dental hygiene will create problems that can last a lifetime. Starting your children young and getting them in the habit of brushing their teeth is the key to success!

Tips for Brushing Your Baby or Toddler’s Teeth

Cleaning Their Gums

Although your baby won’t grow teeth for up to 6 months, it is recommended by dentists that you clean your baby’s gums daily.

To clean your child’s gums, we recommend brushing them with a soft bristled toothbrush or a wet washcloth. Gentle cleaning will be enough to ensure your baby’s gums are healthy and clean gums.

When Do I Actually Start Brushing?

At around 6 months old, you’ll typically notice your baby’s first teeth come in. At this time, you’ll want to continue cleaning their gums and begin tooth brushing.

By continuing to clean their gums, your baby will have less teething pain, and clean gums encourage tooth eruption.

We recommend you brush your baby’s teeth with a soft bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste daily. Many babies are resistant to you putting anything inside of their mouth, but it is essential that you don’t give up on keeping their mouth and teeth clean.

How Do I Go About Brushing My Baby’s Teeth?

To brush your baby’s teeth, use a soft bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste once or twice a day.
Gently brush their teeth in a circular motion for about two minutes. Two minute brushing is widely recommended by dentists, and you can never start too young!

What to do When Your Child Refuses to Let You Brush

As we mentioned before, many young children will be adamant about not allowing you to brush their teeth. Something about putting a toothbrush in their mouth is despicable!

To make this process a lot easier, we recommend approaching teeth brushing in a fun and gentle way. Framing it as a fun activity that your baby gets to do can put a new spin on brushing time.

When brushing your baby’s teeth, make sure to be as gentle as possible so you don’t create any negative, painful experiences associated with the activity.
